Indication | Prevention of heartworm disease and treatment of roundworm, hookworm, whipworm and tapeworm (including hydatid tapeworm) in dogs. |
Actions | Anthelmintic; abamectin blocks the transmission of nerve impulses within heartworm larvae, leading to their paralysis and eventual death. Abamectin blocks these nerve impulses by stimulating the release of a neurotransmitter γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA), and by binding to glutamate gated chloride channels in the nerve and muscle tissues of the heartworm larvae.Oxibendazole disrupts parasite energy metabolism by binding to tubulin, a protein required for the uptake of nutrients and other functions in the parasite.Benzimidazoles also produce many changes in susceptible nematodes, e.g. inhibition of mitochondrial fumerate reductase, reduced glucose transport and uncoupling of oxidative phosphorylation.Praziquantel disrupts the integument of the tapeworm, exposing it to damage from digestive enzymes in the gut and to attack by the dog's immune system. Praziquantel also interferes with muscles in the tapeworm scolex, causing a loss of attachment to the bowel wall. |
