More Information
Drug Name and Strength Clindamycin 150mg
Quantity 100 Capsules
Indication Infections caused by clindamycin sensitive organisms in dogs and cats, including dental infections, wounds, abscesses, osteomyelitis and other infections caused by bacteria susceptible to clindamycin.
Contraindications Do not use in animals with a history of hypersensitivity to clindamycin or lincomycin.
Actions Clindamycin is an antibiotic of the lincosamide class, with activity against anaerobic bacteria and selective Gram positive pathogens. It is also used in the treatment of protozoal infections.Microbiology Clindamycin is a bactericidal or bacteriostatic agent and its active nature depends on the concentration of the active constituent at the site of infection, as well as the sensitivity of the target pathogen. The mode of action is largely time dependent. Clindamycin is typically effective against aerobic bacteria including Staphylococcus sp., Staphylococcus aureus , Streptococcus sp., and anaerobic bacteria including Bacteroides sp., Fusobacterium sp., Peptostreptococcus sp., Propionibacterium sp. and some Clostridium sp.Pharmacokinetics Clindamycin may be bactericidal or bacteriostatic depending on the organism and drug concentration. The mode of action is largely time dependent. Clindamycin is rapidly absorbed from the canine and feline gastrointestinal tract and this is not significantly affected by the presence of food. After absorption, clindamycin is partially metabolised by the liver into active and non-active metabolites. The unchanged drug and its metabolites are excreted in bile, faeces and urine. Clindamycin is excreted into breast milk.
Precautions Antagonism has been reported between clindamycin and erythromycin. The clinical significance of this antagonism is unknown. Periodic monitoring of hepatic and renal function as well as complete blood counts should be undertaken with prolonged therapy (more than one month). Use with caution in animals with severe hepatic and or renal disturbances accompanied by metabolic aberrations. Such animals should have hepatic and renal function monitored during high dose therapy. Clindamycin has been shown to have neuromuscular blocking properties. Use with caution in animals receiving neuromuscular blocking agents.First Aid If poisoning occurs, contact a doctor or Poisons Information Centre. Phone Australia 131 126.
Dosage and Administration For oral administration only. Dental infections, wounds, abscesses. 5.5 mg/kg bodyweight twice daily, or 11 mg/kg bodyweight once daily, for seven to 10 days. Treatment may be extended for up to 28 days. If no clinical improvement is observed within four days, the sensitivity of the pathogen should be re-evaluated. Osteomyelitis. 11 mg/kg bodyweight twice daily for at least 28 days. If no clinical improvement is observed within 14 days, the sensitivity of the pathogen should be re-evaluated.
