Actions | Apex ear drops are antibacterial and insecticidal. They penetrate and release wax. Pyrethrins are effective against ear mites and are amongst the safest ectoparasiticides available. These drops also contain a local anaesthetic for immediate relief.Microbiology Polymyxin B sulfate is a polypeptide bactericidal antibiotic that exerts its effect by interacting strongly with the bacterial cell membranes radically disrupting their permeability and function. It is more effective against Gram-negative than Gram-positive bacteria and its narrow spectrum of activity includes Enterobacter, Klebsiella, Salmonella, Pasteurella, Bordetella and Shigella species, and Escherichia coli. In vitro synergism has been demonstrated with neomycin against Salmonella. The effectiveness of polymyxin B is markedly reduced in the presence of pus and anionic detergents, so it is important to clean the ear canal prior to administration of the drops. Neomycin sulfate is an aminoglycoside antibiotic limited to topical use. It is effective against rapidly dividing bacteria and only needs a short contact time to exert its effect. It has a broad spectrum of activity that includes E. coli, Proteus, Actinobacillus, Salmonella and Klebsiella. Nitrofurazone is a safe and effective antimicrobial that is bacteriostatic at low doses and bactericidal at high doses. The basic mechanism of action has not been determined; however, it is thought to exert its effect by inhibiting a number of microbial enzyme systems including those involved in carbohydrate metabolism. Its spectrum of activity includes Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococci. |
