Contraindications | Use in animals when there is evidence of hepatic, cardiac or renal dysfunction or a history of blood dyscrasias. |
Actions | Pharmacology Phenylbutazone is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory and as such has analgesic, anti-inflammatory and antipyretic properties. It inhibits the enzyme cyclooxygenase thereby preventing the formation of arachidonic acid derived inflammatory mediators thromboxane, prostaglandin and prostacyclins. Other pharmacological actions may include decreasing renal blood flow and glomerular filtration rate and decreasing platelet aggregation.Pharmacokinetics Phenylbutazone is mostly found bound to plasma proteins (96 to 99%), and is eliminated by hepatic metabolism. |
Precautions | Adhere strictly to dose rate, especially for ponies and foals. Dosage and Administration | Mix well with a little dry bran or oats, or make into a paste and syringe into the mouth. Sachets. Each sachet (1.3 g) contains approximately 1 g phenylbutazone.Horses. 2.2 to 8.8 mg/kg/day. Reduce daily dose to lowest level producing desired clinical response. For example, for a 450 kg horse: give 2 sachets twice daily (4.4 mg/kg twice daily) for the first day; then 1 sachet twice daily (2.2 mg/kg twice daily) for four days; then 1 sachet once daily (2.2 mg/kg daily) or on alternate days.Ponies. 2.2 to 4.4 mg/kg/day. Reduce daily dose to lowest level producing desired clinical response. For example, for a 225 kg pony: give half a sachet twice daily (2.2 mg/kg twice daily) for four days; then half a sachet once daily (2.2 mg/kg daily) or on alternate days. |
