More Information
Drug Name and Strength Amoxycillin 400mg,
Clavulanic Acid 100mg
Quantity 1 Tablet
Indication Infections due to susceptible organisms in calves and dogs, including enteritis and respiratory tract, urinary tract and skin infections in dogs.
Contraindications Administration to small herbivores, e.g. rabbits or guinea pigs. History of allergic reactions to penicillins.
Actions Resistance to many antibiotics is caused by β-lactamase enzymes which destroy the antibiotic before it can act on the bacteria. The clavulanate counteracts this defence mechanism by inactivating the β-lactamases, thus rendering the organisms sensitive to amoxycillin's rapid bactericidal effect at concentrations readily attainable in the body. In vitro, Clavulox is active against a wide range of clinically important bacteria, including Gram-positive: Staphylococci (including β-lactamase producing strains), Corynebacteria, Streptococci; Gram-negative: Escherichia coli (including β-lactamase producing strains), Bordetella bronchiseptica, Proteus mirabilis, Salmonella sp. (including β-lactamase producing strains), Pasteurella and Klebsiella.Clavulox is not indicated for cases involving Pseudomonas sp.
Dosage and Administration Dogs. A standard dose rate of 12.5 mg/kg bodyweight (1 tablet/40 kg bodyweight) twice daily is recommended for the majority of infections, including skin, urinary tract and gastrointestinal tract.Refractory cases, particularly respiratory tract infections, have shown improved cure rates by doubling the dose to 25 mg/kg bodyweight twice daily. For routine cases involving all indications, continue therapy for 5 to 7 days or 48 hours after all symptoms have subsided. In chronic or refractory cases where there is considerable tissue damage, a longer course of therapy may be required to allow sufficient time for damaged tissue to repair. Based on clinical trials, the following durations are suggested as guidelines. Chronic skin disease: 10 to 20 days; chronic cystitis: 10 to 28 days; respiratory disease: 8 to 10 days. Calves. The recommended dose rate is 6.25 to 12.5 mg/kg bodyweight twice daily; use the higher dose rate for the initial dose and for severely affected calves. A 40 kg calf requires 1 tablet initially followed by ½ tablet twice daily; in severe cases 1 tablet twice daily. Continue treatment until 12 hours after all symptoms have subsided.
