|Drug Name and Strength||Clindamycin (as clindamycin hydrochloride) 75mg|
|Indication||Treatment of infected wounds, abscesses, and dental infections in dogs and cats, and treatment of osteomyelitis in dogs where these infections are caused by bacteria susceptible to clindamycin.|
|Contraindications||Administration to food producing species of animals or horses; administration to rabbits, hamsters and guinea pigs and to animals with a history of hypersensitivity to clindamycin or lincomycin. Do not use concomitantly with chloramphenicol or macrolides as they may antagonise each other at their site of action.|
|Actions||Microbiology Clindamycin works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis through binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit and inhibiting the peptidyl transferase enzyme. It is particularly effective against Gram-positive aerobic bacteria Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococci and Streptococci, and against anaerobic bacteria Bacteroides sp., Fusobacterium sp., Actinomyces sp., Peptostreptococcus sp. Propionibacterium sp. and some Clostridium sp., including C. perfringens. Pharmacokinetics Clindamycin is characterised by its high lipid solubility, wide distribution in the body, and capacity to penetrate cellular barriers. Tissue concentrations consistently exceed serum concentrations by several times because of passage across cell membranes. Clindamycin achieves effective concentrations in bone.|
|Precautions||During prolonged therapy of one month or greater, periodic liver and kidney function tests and blood counts should routinely be performed. Animals with severe renal and/or hepatic disturbances should be dosed with caution. Use with caution in animals receiving treatment with neuromuscular blocking agents. Clindamycin and lincomycin show parallel resistance, and partial cross resistance has been demonstrated between clindamycin and macrolide antibiotics. Safety in gestating bitches, queens and breeding male dogs and cats has not been established. Clindamycin should not be administered to cats for longer than two weeks as it may cause liver and gall bladder damage.Disposal Dispose of empty container by wrapping with paper and putting in garbage.|
|Dosage and Administration||Dental infections, wounds, abscesses in dogs and cats. 5.5 mg/kg bodyweight every 12 hours for seven to 10 days. In dogs, treatment may be extended to a maximum of 28 days. Osteomyelitis in dogs. 11 mg/kg bodyweight every 12 hours for at least 28 days.
