Indication | Treatment of susceptible infections of the respiratory tract, the urogenital tract, the skin and localised infections in soft tissues; treatment and prophylaxis of osteomyelitis in dogs and cats. Treatment of susceptible infections of the gastrointestinal tract in dogs. |
Contraindications | Administration to animals that are hypersensitive to cephalosporins and penicillins. |
Actions | Broad spectrum cephalosporin antibiotic which is chemically related to the penicillins. Resistant to the action of β-lactamases, including staphylococcal penicillinase, and therefore active against strains of Staphylococcus aureus that are insensitive to penicillin (or related antibiotics such as ampicillin or amoxycillin).Has a bactericidal activity against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including Staphylococcus sp. (including penicillin resistant strains), Streptococcus sp., Corynebacterium sp., Pasteurella multocida, Escherichia coli, Proteus sp., Micrococcus sp. and Moraxella sp. |
Precautions | As with other antibiotics that are excreted mainly by the kidneys, accumulation may occur in the body when renal function is impaired. In cases of known renal insufficiency the dose should be reduced. Some dogs may exhibit nausea and vomiting.Disposal Dispose of empty container by wrapping with paper and putting in garbage. |
Dosage and Administration | 10 to 15 mg/kg bodyweight twice daily for 5 days. Kefvet tablets are well accepted by cats and dogs but may be crushed or added to food if necessary. In severe, acute or refractory conditions the dose may safely be doubled, or given at more frequent intervals. Treatment for 5 days is recommended but this may be extended or shortened at the discretion of the veterinary surgeon.Dosage guide, 500 mg tablets (twice daily). 8-15 kg bodyweight. Quarter to half a tablet. 16-24 kg. Half to three-quarters of a tablet. 25-34 kg. Three-quarters to 1 tablet. 35-50 kg. 1 to 1.5 tablets.Dosage guide, 1000 mg tablets (twice daily). 15-24 kg bodyweight. Quarter tablet. 25-50 kg. Half to three-quarters of a tablet. 51-64 kg. Three-quarters to 1 tablet. 65 kg and over. 1 tablets or more. |
