Drug Name and Strength | Penethamate hydriodide 10 g (equiv. benzylpenicillin 10,000 mg) per vial |
---|---|
Quantity | 10 x 10gm Bottles |
Indication | Infections due to Gram-positive bacteria, such as mastitis, uterine infections, respiratory infections and footrot. |
Contraindications | Do not use in avians. Must not be injected intravenously. |
Actions | Because of its special affinity for alveolar epithelium it is particularly suitable for infections of the mammary and respiratory tissues.Mamyzin may therefore be described as a diffusion complex, protecting and conveying the benzylpenicillin intact to the focus of infection where it is released to exert its bactericidal effect.Pharmacokinetics Being a salt of a weak base, a relatively greater part of Mamyzin will appear in the plasma and tissue in a nonionised (molecular) form, as distinct from the complete dissociation of the commonly used penicillins, which are salts of the strong penicillinic acid. Mamyzin is not inactivated by penicillinase. Because of this and in view of its lipophilic properties, it is distributed in the tissues differently from other penicillin products; it is concentrated in the udder and lungs and has a special ability to diffuse through cell membranes, endothelia, tissue barriers and penicillinase zones, after which it is hydrolysed to the therapeutically active benzylpenicillin and to diethylaminoethanol. |
