|Drug Name and Strength||Meloxicam 0.5 mg/mL|
|Indication||Alleviation of inflammation and pain in acute and chronic musculoskeletal disorders such as discospondylitis, arthropathy and soft tissue injuries. Management of febrile conditions in combination with appropriate antibiotics.|
|Contraindications||Do not use in food producing species of animals. Use of this product is contraindicated in animals suffering from cardiac, hepatic or clinical renal disease. Older cats being considered for chronic treatment should be screened for pre-existing renal, hepatic or gastrointestinal disorders or hypovolaemia (using haematology, serum biochemical analysis and urinalysis as necessary), before administration of Meloxicam 0.5 Anti-Inflammatory Oral Suspension for Cats. Use is contraindicated in any dehydrated, hypovolaemic or hypotensive animal as there is the risk of renal toxicity. Use is contraindicated in animals when there is possibility of gastrointestinal ulceration or bleeding, or when there is evidence of a haemorrhagic disorder or individual hypersensitivity to the product.|
|Actions||Meloxicam is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) derived from oxicam. Meloxicam acts by inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis, exerting anti-inflammatory, antiexudative, analgesic and antipyretic effects. It reduces leukocyte infiltration into inflamed tissue.|
|Precautions||As for all NSAIDs, use in any animal less than 6 weeks of age or in debilitated aged animals may involve additional risk. If use in such animals cannot be avoided, careful clinical management may be required. Safe use in pregnant or lactating animals has not been established. Pretreatment with anti-inflammatory drugs may result in additional or increased adverse effects; accordingly, a treatment free period with such drugs should be observed for at least 24 hours before commencing Meloxicam 0.5 Anti-Inflammatory Oral Suspension for Cats. The treatment free period should take into account the pharmacokinetic properties of the drugs used previously. A clinical response is normally seen within seven days. When treatment is continued for more than seven days, cats should be closely monitored for adverse effects. Treatment should be discontinued after 14 days at the latest if no clinical improvement is apparent. Response to long-term therapy should be monitored at three monthly intervals or more frequently. Meloxicam 0.5 Anti-Inflammatory Oral Suspension for Cats should not be used following parenteral injection of meloxicam or any other NSAID, as appropriate dosage regimens for such follow-up treatments have not been established.|
|Dosage and Administration||Shake the bottle well before use. Dose using the dosing syringe or via the drop method. Administer orally either mixed with food or directly into the mouth around meal times. Initial treatment is a single dose of meloxicam 0.1 mg/kg bodyweight on the first day. Continue treatment by oral administration once daily (at 24 hour intervals), at a maintenance dose rate of 0.05 mg/kg bodyweight. Particular care should be given with regard to accuracy of dosing.|
|Storage||Store below 25°C (air conditioning). Discard three months after initial use when stored at 25°C.|
