|Drug Name and Strength||Gentamicin sulfate 5 mg/mL (equiv. gentamicin 3 mg/mL) in a nonirritant gel base|
|Indication||Bacterial eye infections due to susceptible organisms in dogs, cats and horses.|
|Contraindications||Administration to animals with viral infections; remission of cases of viral origin should be apparent prior to commencing therapy.|
|Actions||Aminoglycoside antibiotic, bactericidal by nature of its irreversible inhibition of protein synthesis. It is highly active against Gram-positive organisms and most Gram-negative bacilli, including strains of Pseudomonas and Proteus which may be resistant to other antibiotics. Its wide spectrum of antibacterial cover makes it a highly effective topical treatment in both primary and secondary bacterial infections of the eye and surrounding tissues.The specifically developed gel base provides a vehicle in veterinary ophthalmic preparations. It combines the desired stability of individual components with lack of irritancy, and film spread of active ingredients to the entire corneal surface.|
|Warnings||Do not use as first line therapy without first undertaking in vitro studies to confirm sensitivity of the causative organism(s).|
|Dosage and Administration||Instil 1 or 2 drops into the conjunctival sac three or four times daily.To meet specific individual cases gradually reduce frequency of application; do not prematurely withdraw therapy.Discard any unused product after treatment is complete.|
|Storage||Store below 25°C (air conditioning). Protect from light.|
