Indication | Bacterial infections due to susceptible organisms in dogs and cats including alimentary tract infections (e.g. gastroenteritis, peritonitis), upper and lower respiratory tract infections and genitourinary tract infections; skin infections, septicaemias, eye, ear and mouth infections; salmonellosis. Coccidiosis and toxoplasmosis also respond. |
Contraindications | Administration to animals with known sulfonamide sensitivity, hepatic damage or blood dyscrasias. Administration of Tribrissen 20 tablets to cats weighing less than 1 kg. |
Actions | The two components act synergistically to block the synthesis of bacterial folates at two separate stages. Folates are essential to the bacterial cell for multiplication and survival; this blocking agent kills a wide range of susceptible bacteria, and also reduces the possibility of bacterial resistance.Tribrissen is active against the common Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms found in small animals, including Staphylococci and Streptococci, Escherichia coli, Bacillus, Bordetella, Brucella, Corynebacterium, Fusiformis, Haemophilus, Klebsiella sp., Listeria monocytogenes, Nocardia, Pasteurella, Salmonella, Shigella and Proteus sp.Erysipelothrix, Leptospira, Pseudomonas and Mycobacterium tuberculosis organisms are not susceptible. |
Precautions | Do not break Tribrissen 20 tablets when giving to cats; salivation occurs in this species if the uncoated drug comes in contact with buccal mucosa. |
Dosage and Administration | Tribrissen 20. Cats. 1 tablet daily. Dogs. Average daily dose is 30 mg/kg bodyweight (i.e. of combined active ingredients), 1 tablet/4 kg bodyweight daily. Tribrissen 80 tablets may be preferred for large dogs. Give the tablets as a single daily dose or half the daily dose every 12 hours. Continue treatment in dogs and cats for 5 days or until 2 days after symptoms have subsided. In obstinate cases (e.g. chronic skin infections) the above dose can be safely doubled.Use only Tribrissen 20 tablets for cats; they are sugar coated to avoid salivation in this species. This smaller tablet is also suitable for small dogs.Tribrissen 80. Dogs. Average daily dose is 30 mg/kg bodyweight (combined active ingredients), i.e. 1 tablet/16 kg bodyweight daily. Give as a single daily dose or half the daily dose every 12 hours. In obstinate cases the above dose may be doubled. |
