Drug Name and Strength | Marbofloxacin 25mg |
---|---|
Quantity | 1 Tablet |
Indication | Treatment of skin and soft tissue infections (superficial pyodermas, wounds and abscesses) associated with marbofloxacin susceptible strains of Staphylococcus intermedius in dogs and Pasteurella multocida in cats, and urinary tract infections (cystitis) associated with marbofloxacin susceptible strains of Escherichia coli and Proteus mirabilis in dogs. |
Contraindications | Administration to immature growing dogs (small and medium breeds up to 8 months of age, large breeds up to 12 months of age, giant breeds up to 18 months of age) and in cats less than 12 months of age. Marbofloxacin and other quinolones have been shown to cause arthropathy in immature animals of most species tested, the dog being particularly sensitive to this side effect.Administration to dogs and cats known to be hypersensitive to quinolones. |
Actions | Marbofloxacin is a synthetic broad spectrum antibacterial agent from the fluoroquinolone class of chemotherapeutic agents. The primary action of fluoroquinolones is to inhibit the bacterial enzyme DNA gyrase. In susceptible organisms, fluoroquinolones are rapidly bactericidal at relatively low concentrations. Marbofloxacin is bactericidal against a broad range of Gram-negative and Gram-positive organisms.Minimum bactericidal concentrations are typically the same as, or one doubling dilution higher than, the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs). |
Warnings | Do not use in food producing species of animals. For use only in dogs and cats where indicated by antibiotic sensitivity testing according to principles of prudent use. |
Precautions | Quinolones should be used with caution in animals with known or suspected CNS disorders. In such animals, quinolones have, in rare instances, been associated with CNS stimulation, which may lead to convulsive seizures. Quinolones have been shown to produce erosions of cartilage of weight bearing joints and other signs of arthropathy in immature animals of various species.Although it occurs rarely, it is prudent to consider that any fluoroquinolone may have the potential to induce retinal degeneration in cats, especially when used above label dose rates or in animals that may be elderly or suffering from renal or hepatic disease. Safety studies up to ten times the highest recommended dose have not demonstrated toxic retinopathy in cats treated with marbofloxacin.First Aid If poisoning occurs, contact a doctor or Poisons Information Centre. Phone 131 126. |
Dosage and Administration | Skin and soft tissue infections, dogs and cats. 2.75 mg/kg once daily for five to 14 days. Urinary tract infections, dogs. 2.75 mg/kg once daily for ten to 14 days. These doses correspond to: one 25 mg tablet/9 kg or one 100 mg tablet/36 kg.Efficacy for the treatment of skin and soft tissue infections was confirmed at a dosage of 2.75 mg/kg. The dosage may be safely increased to 5.5 mg/kg for two to three days beyond the cessation of clinical signs for a maximum of 30 days, should the patient require more intensive antimicrobial therapy. Some factors to be considered in the determination of dosage are the nature and severity of the infection, the susceptibility of the pathogen, and ability of the patient to combat infection. If no improvement is noted within five days, the diagnosis should be re-evaluated and a different course of therapy considered. Clinical studies did not reveal improved clinical resolution rates at 5.5 mg/kg in comparison to a dosage of 2.75 mg/kg. |
