Drug Name and Strength | Cloxacillin 600 mg (as the benzathine salt) |
---|---|
Quantity | 100 Tubes |
Indication | Control of mastitis at the point of drying off. Effective antibiotic levels are maintained in the udder of the dry cow for up to seven weeks. The use of Elaclox DCX at the point of drying off provides a sustained action against mastitis producing bacteria in the udder. Elaclox DCX has also been shown to reduce the incidence of subclinical mastitis during the dry period. |
Contraindications | Administration to lactating cows or cows expected to calve within 35 days of treatment; or to animals with a history of allergy to penicillin. |
Actions | Elaclox DCX is active against Gram-positive organisms associated with mastitis and is effective against Streptococcus sp., Staphylococcus sp. (including penicillin resistant strains), Corynebacterium sp. and other organisms susceptible to cloxacillin. Effective antibiotic levels are maintained in the udder of the dry cow for seven to eight weeks. Cloxacillin is bactericidal in action and is nonirritant in the udder tissue. |
Precautions | Wear rubber gloves when infusing the suspension. |
Dosage and Administration | 1 syringe per quarter after the final milking before drying off. Milk the cow out normally; clean and disinfect the teats before infusion of the antibiotic. It is normally unnecessary and undesirable to introduce any further treatment during the dry period.Syringes have a variable tip which allows for either partial or full insertion into the teat canal. Partial insertion is preferable as it may prevent unnecessary damage to the teat orifice and reduce the risk of infection. There is evidence that partial insertion can reduce the incidence of Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus uberis infections. Full insertion will be needed for larger teat orifices. |
Storage | Store below 25°C (air conditioning). Protect from light. |
