|Indication||Alleviation of inflammation and pain in acute and chronic musculoskeletal disorders in dogs. Reduction of postoperative pain and inflammation following orthopaedic and soft tissue surgery in dogs.|
|Contraindications||Administration to pregnant or lactating animals and animals less than 6 weeks of age. Administration to animals with gastrointestinal disorders such as irritation and haemorrhage, impaired hepatic, cardiac or renal function and haemorrhagic disorders, or when there is evidence of individual hypersensitivity to the product. If use in such animals cannot be avoided, careful clinical management may be required.|
|Actions||Meloxicam is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) of the oxicam class which acts by inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis, thereby exerting anti-inflammatory, antiexudative, analgesic and antipyretic effects. It reduces leukocyte infiltration into the inflamed tissue.|
|Precautions||Other NSAIDs, diuretics, anticoagulants, aminoglycoside antibiotics and substances with high protein binding may compete for binding and thus lead to toxic effects. Loxicom must not be administered in conjunction with other NSAIDs or glucocorticosteroids. Concurrent administration of potential nephrotoxic drugs should be avoided.Pretreatment with other anti-inflammatory drugs prior to the use of Loxicom may result in additional or increased adverse effects; accordingly, a treatment free period with such drugs should be observed for at least 24 hours before commencement with Loxicom. The treatment free period, however, should take into account the pharmacokinetic properties of the drugs previously used. Hypovolaemia or hypotension should be corrected prior to use of the product. Parenteral administration of Loxicom is well tolerated without local adverse reactions.First Aid If poisoning occurs, contact a doctor or Poisons Information Centre. Phone Australia 131 126.Disposal Dispose of empty contain by wrapping with paper and putting in garbage.|
|Dosage and Administration||Shake well before use. Clean and dry measuring syringes after each use. Administer Loxicom mixed with food. On the first day of treatment, a single dose of 0.2 mg/kg bodyweight should be given. Treatment is to be continued once daily by oral administration (at 24 hour intervals) at a maintenance dose of 0.1 mg/kg bodyweight. Particular care should be taken with accuracy and timing of dosing. Accuracy. The suspension can be given using the Loxicom measuring syringes provided in the package (depending on the weight of the dog). The syringes fit onto the bottle and have a kg–bodyweight scale that corresponds to the maintenance dose (i.e. meloxicam 0.1 mg/kg bodyweight). For accurate dosing, the 1 mL syringe should be used for dogs weighing up to 5 kg, and the 5 mL syringe should be used for dogs weighing 5 to 25 kg. The appropriate sized syringe should be used and the volume corresponding to the dog's weight administered. Each marked graduation corresponds to the maintenance dose of Loxicom, so for the initial dose, the dose should be administered twice. Timing. Ensure dose is delivered at the same time each day. A clinical response is normally seen within 3 to 4 days. If no improvement is noticeable after 10 days of treatment, please consult a veterinary surgeon.|
