|Drug Name and Strength||Amoxycillin 40mg,
Clavulanic Acid 10mg
|Indication||Treatment of bacterial infections sensitive to clavulanic acid and amoxycillin in dogs, cats and calves. Clinically, Noroclav Tablets have been shown to be effective in treating a wide range of diseases, including skin diseases (including deep and superficial pyodermas), soft tissue infections (e.g. abscesses and anal sacculitis), dental infections (e.g. gingivitis), urinary tract infections, respiratory disease (involving upper and lower respiratory tract) and enteritis.|
|Contraindications||Administration to small herbivores (e.g. rabbits or guinea pigs) or animals with a history of allergic reactions to penicillins.|
|Actions||Resistance to many antibiotics is caused by β-lactamase enzymes that destroy the antibiotic before it can act on the bacteria themselves. The clavulanate in Noroclav Tablets counteracts this defence mechanism by inactivating the β-lactamases, thus rendering the bacteria sensitive to amoxycillin's rapid bacterial effect at concentrations readily attainable in the body. In vitro, Noroclav Tablets are active against a wide range of clinically important Gram-positive and Gram-negative aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, including Gram-positive: Staphylococci (including β-lactamase producing strains), Streptococci and Corynebacteria; Gram-negative: Escherichia coli, (including β-lactamase producing strains), Salmonella sp., (including β-lactamase producing strains), Bordetella bronchiseptica, Klebsiella sp., Proteus sp. and Pasteurella sp.|
|Precautions||Noroclav Tablets are not indicated for the treatment of cases involving Pseudomonas sp.|
|Dosage and Administration||For oral administration only. Noroclav Tablets are often accepted from the hand even by sick dogs and cats; alternatively, the tablets may be crushed and added to a little food. Dogs, cats. A standard dose rate of 12.5 mg/kg bodyweight twice daily is recommended. For the majority of infections, including those of the skin and soft tissue, urinary tract and gastrointestinal tract, this dosage is effective. Refractory cases, however, particularly those of the respiratory tract, have shown improved cure rates by doubling the dose to 25 mg/kg bodyweight twice daily. Note. The smallest animals of 1 kg bodyweight, when dosed with half a 50 mg tablet will already be receiving the doubled (25 mg/kg) dose rate. Calves. 500 mg tablets: 6.25 to 12.5 mg/kg bodyweight (1 tablet/40 to 80 kg) twice daily. Use the higher dose rate for the initial dose and for severely affected calves. Treatment should be continued until 12 hours after all symptoms have subsided. Duration of therapy. Routine cases involving all indications: the majority of cases respond to between five and seven days therapy. Chronic or refractory cases: in these cases where there is considerable tissue damage, a longer course of therapy may be required in that it allows sufficient time for damaged tissue to repair. Based on clinical trials, the following durations are suggested as guidelines. Chronic skin disease: ten to 20 days. Chronic cystitis: ten to 28 days. Respiratory disease: eight to ten days.|
