Indication | For the relief of musculoskeletal pain in horses, including arthritis, arthrosis, bursitis, osteoarthritis, tendinitis, tenosynovitis and inflammation of the skin and soft tissues. When used as part of the management of febrile conditions, the underlying cause of the fever must also be treated. |
Contraindications | Severe hepatic, renal or cardiac disease. Gastrointestinal disease, particularly gastrointestinal ulceration and haemorrhage. History of blood disorders. |
Actions | Pharmacology Phenylbutazone has anti-inflammatory and analgesic activity, and sodium salicylate has antipyretic and analgesic activity. The sodium salicylate acts rapidly and the phenylbutazone provides long term activity. |
Precautions | When used as part of the management of febrile conditions, the underlying cause of the fever must also be treated. |
Dosage and Administration | Administer by slow intravenous injection. Horses, foals. Initially give 10 to 20 mL/450 kg (1 to 2 mL/45 kg). Dose can be reduced, according to response, to 5 to 10 mL/450 kg, and continued for five to six days. Use the contents of the vial within three months of initial broaching, and discard any unused portion. |
