|Drug Name and Strength||Pimobendan 3.5 mg/mL|
|Indication||Treatment of canine congestive heart failure (CHF) originating from dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) or valvular insufficiency (mitral and/or tricuspid regurgitation).Treatment of preclinical DCM in large breed dogs. When used to treat preclinical DCM in large breed dogs, pimobendan significantly prolonged the time to the onset of CHF or sudden death.|
|Contraindications||This product is contraindicated in cases of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy or clinical conditions where an augmentation of cardiac output is not recommended for functional or anatomical reasons (e.g. aortic stenosis).|
|Actions||Pharmacology Pimobendan exerts its stimulatory myocardial effect by a dual mechanism of action: increase in calcium sensitivity of cardiac myofilaments and inhibition of phosphodiesterase (type III). It also exhibits a vasodilatory effect through an inhibitory action on phosphodiesterase III activity.Pharmacokinetics After oral administration of pimobendan, the absolute bioavailability of the active principle is 60 to 63%. The mean plasma protein binding is 93%. The plasma elimination half-life of pimobendan is approximately 30 minutes, and the main active metabolite elimination half-life is approximately two hours. Almost the entire dose is eliminated via faeces.|
|Precautions||Use during pregnancy and lactation. In studies with rats and rabbits, pimobendan had no effect on fertility, and embryotoxic effects only occurred at maternotoxic doses. In rat experiments, it has been shown that pimobendan is excreted into milk. Vetmedin Oral Solution should only be administered to pregnant and lactating bitches if the expected therapeutic benefit outweighs the potential risk.Wash hands after use.First Aid If poisoning occurs, contact a doctor or Poisons Information Centre. |Dosage and Administration||Administer orally at a dose range of 0.1 to 0.3 mg pimobendan/kg bodyweight twice daily. The ideal dose is pimobendan 0.25 mg/kg bodyweight (equivalent to Vetmedin oral solution 0.07 mL/kg bodyweight) twice daily, administered approximately 12 hours apart. Each dose should be given on an empty stomach, and at least one hour before feeding.Vetmedin oral solution may be given concurrently with a diuretic treatment such as furosemide.|
